Blood Fire Death
Bathory reinvented metal twice. First, Quorthon – Thomas Forsberg, working almost entirely alone in Stockholm – turned raw distortion and freezing atmosphere into one of the templates for Scandinavian black metal. Then, with “Blood Fire Death”, “Hammerheart” and “Twilight of the Gods”, he opened that sound into something vast and epic and gave viking metal its name. Twelve albums, nearly all written and produced single-handedly – a body of work that still casts a long shadow. When Quorthon died on 3 June 2004, he left behind music that had almost never been heard on a stage: Bathory played live only a handful of times, very early on, and essentially never again. That absence is where BLOOD FIRE DEATH begin. Since 2010, six musicians from Bruchsal in southern Germany have carried this catalogue to the stage – not as a copy, but as a serious tribute to Quorthon's vision. Their repertoire spans some 35 songs from every chapter of the band: the unpolished force of the early records “Bathory”, “The Return” and “Under the Sign of the Black Mark”, and the wide, hymn-like songs of the viking era alike. It takes the full sound this music was written for: dense walls of guitar, thundering drums, deep bass, layered choirs and keyboards, acoustic passages – and over it, depending on the song, cutting black-metal screams or clear, polyphonic clean vocals. A separate acoustic set shows the same songs from a different, often surprising angle. Across more than 120 concerts, in clubs and on established festivals, BLOOD FIRE DEATH have earned an audience that knows these songs and lives them in the room. If you have ever wanted to hear Bathory the way the stage never allowed, this is where to find it.
